What can I say, but “wow”!
A great day on the river. Team 456 North camp left around 8am and made it to the Boatworks around 8:45. We had coffee, Spot had a chocolate chip waffle and Der Commodore chowed down on his BYOL(axative) muesli. By the time we dropped Tink, gear, 1 and 6 at Hwy 130, drove to Webberville Park to drop the transporter and returned, it was about 11am.
Mother Nature held back the colder wind and rain until after we finished, so we had nice (albeit largely overcast) cool temperatures. We hit a headwind for alot of the day, but had our moments with a generous wind from behind — allowing for sailing experimentation with a homemade sail, mast and boom. I think we earned a badge for the sail.
I’m thinking that, next trip, I’d like to bring gear to cut some nice tire material out from all the tires we find and make some primitive huaraches. Pretty sure that’s a badge too.
We capped off a nice day with the traditional BBQ. Simply heaven.

ADDENDUM:
Here’s the hawk video:
…And, the video of the disgusting, presumably “treated” water runoff, that left the river looking like a filthy man’s bubblebath and couldn’t have possibly been good for the environment. It went on for miles…

High points: running before the wind on a swift current, PVC mast bending like a deep sea rod with a marlin hooked to the tackle! Smoked Gouda Cheese & Fireman’s 4. Red tailed hawk downing a duck & later an Eagle flaunting its fish catch. BBQ @ Donn’s.
Low Points: Vulture sucking down a piece of river Kill intestine. Soap Suds spewing from the water “treatment” outlet. Canoe jerking back and forth on the roof rack in 30mph north wind gusts on the drive home.
Johannes, I added the video of the hawk and the river suds above as an addendum to the river blog. Enjoy.
We also stumbled across a quarry lake with a mouth on the South side of the river. Seagulls and pelicans, in the middle of Texas. A neat discovery.
So, I looked it up and that quarry was the Norwood Quarry in Del Valle for a company called CEMEX. It’s a global cement and materials company, founded in northern Mexico in 1906, with over 15 billion dollars in annual sales. It’s the largest producer of cement in North America. http://www.cemex.com/AboutUs/History.aspx and http://www.manta.com/c/mmlm8fh/cemex-construction-materials-south-llc
