So our mission was simple on this day. To simply get the odyssey moving forward by hitting the simplest part of the river.  We launched from the public boat ramp/park just west of Hula Hut, paddled to Hula Hut and docked, got out and had a beer and some chips, then portaged through the property as paid customers.  We traveled down Lake Austin Blvd, to Redbud Rd and portaged there.  Straight shot (more or less) from put in to Austin High School boat ramp.  A total of about 3 miles done! 3 down, 859 to go!

    Great start to the website!
Crocker: missed you out there, catch you next time.

I continue to endorse the notion that we should start the journey where the river flows year round.

It looks like starting in Ballinger might be a good start, IF it’s during a rainy period. After O.H. Ivie Lake, there should be fewer seasonal concerns. Looks like 330 miles above Austin, 290 Miles below Austin. Longest stretch without good access may be 60 miles. The next longest is about 33 miles.

Ok, on to our next stretch: Austin High to 973 (a road off Hwy 71 around the airport) – 15 miles. However, Google Earth is now showing construction where they’re putting in a new bridge (image date was 3 months ago, I doubt they’re done with construction). We’d need to scout to see if they’ve put any fences up that prohibit us from taking out there. The next good take out I see is Little Webberville Park. It is about 27 miles from Austin High. Still doable in 1 day, if we’re in shape and paddle all daylight hours. Another option would be to leave Saturday early afternoon, camp on the river, and end Sunday at Little Webberville (or Big Webberville Park that is 5 miles further).

    Discuss.
